Superb Musicians in Tulane and SUNO events this weekend

Tulane and Southern Universities host a gathering of performers who will explore the 'Sound of Freedom' this coming weekend.

The line-ups are illustrious for events on Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8.

William and Patricia Parker are visiting from New York City to be part of the 'What Is The Sound of Freedom?' concert in Tulane's Dixon Hall. Patricia Nicholson combines poetry and dance to illuminate present days. William Parker, bassist, composer and bandleader for more than 30 albums, is one of the most venerated musicians alive. The Parkers' performance continues their 2017 Hope Cries for Justice' theme.

Tyshawn Sorey, drummer, composer of the Josephine Baker song-cycle, Professor at Wesleyan University and young MacArthur Fellow, will deploy arrays of percussion for his part of the Saturday concert. Tyshawn Sorey will also host a listening-party for his album Versimilitude, Saturday afternoon at 3:00, in Band Room 260 of Tulane's Dixon Annex. Tyshawn Sorey's excellent 2017 comments on the creativity he admires in music can be heard below:

Courtney Bryan, co-organizer of the 'Freedom' events with her fellow Tulane Professor Matt Sakakeeny.and musician-acitvist Wendi Moore-O'Neal and a composer celebrated by the New York Times, also plays on Saturday night in Dixon Hall.

Ysaye Barnwell, a member of the long-acclaimed a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, from 1979 to 2013, will sing in the 'Freedom' concert.

Ysaye Barnwell then joins Wendi Moore-O'Neat on Sunday afternoon at Southern University of New Orleans for the bimonthly 'Community Sing Revival'. The collective singing begins at 3:00 p.m in Dr. Millie Charles Hall, 6400 Press Drive.

All events in this inspiring 'Freedom' set, so right-on-time for 2018, are free and open to the public.

We can expect wonders to happen, as all the performers are committed to crossing genres, bridging composition and improvisation, and making each time on stage "unique to the audience" who is alove involved.
